Our Mission
We believe that vegetable gardening not only offers access to delicious and healthy foods, but also provides an opportunity to connect with ecology at a time when we need it most. At Island Harvest, we aim to facilitate the creation of beautiful spaces in which we can nurture the bond with our food and the land. By enabling our island community to grow food, we hope to encourage broader environmental stewardship and a deeper connectedness to the meals that we share.
Our Method
At Island Harvest, all of our gardens are established and maintained using organic practices. We never use harmful chemicals and like to utilize natural, locally derived fertilizers and composts to feed the soil. We adhere to a no-till approach in growing, meaning that we employ minimal soil disturbance in order to cultivate thriving, biologically active soils which will in turn feed our plants. Our approach is rooted in an understanding and respect for nature’s complex systems and we design our productive landscapes with this in mind.
Luci Imbach, founder
Luci grew up in Baltimore and lives on Nantucket year round. She attended the University of Vermont, where she received a BS in Environmental Studies while focusing on sustainable agriculture and food systems. During her time at University, she turned her love of food into a passion for natural and small-scale farming methods. Since graduating in 2017 and spending a year traveling the Eastern hemisphere, she has worked in numerous commercial farm settings in New York City and here on Nantucket. She is a self proclaimed foodie and when she isn’t tending to a garden, she’s probably surfing.
